Could Resveratrol, an ingredient found in small amounts in red wine, be more effective and safe in treating Alzheimer's disease than current medications?
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD), you may be wondering whether there is any way to slow down the disease, make symptoms milder, or even prevent them.
Resveratrol may reduce brain cell damage caused by harmful chemical byproducts. Addionally, several studies have shown that moderate consumption of red wine, which includes resveratrol, is associated with a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers are conducting a study to find out whether resveratrol can slow down or prevent the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in people with mild to moderate AD.
The resveratrol study is a twelve month clinical trial to find out whether a mixture containing resveratrol treats the symptoms of AD among people with Alzheimer's. The research study, which is being conducted at Mount Sinai, Elmhurst Hospital Center, and Phelps, is sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association.
Researchers for this study are looking for participants who:
- have been diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease
- are ages 50-90
- speak English or Spanish
- have a study partner -- a friend or relative who can accompany the volunteer to all clinic visits and answer questions about him or her
Study participants will be assigned at random (that is, by chance) to receive resveratrol or a placebo (sugar pill, not active study drug), and will be regularly monitored during the research study by physicians or other qualified health care professionals who specialize in Alzheimer's disease.
Study drug is provided at no cost to you. Study requires five visits to the study clinic over the course of the twelve months while on the drug, followed by monitoring for an additional six months.
